In Memoriam: Sebastian Espejo

Embracing the future of Quito Foods

Dear reader,

Let me begin by offering my condolences to anyone who knew Sebastian Espejo (1969 - 2017?) personally and to those who were privileged enough to see this extraordinary man turning his passion into a successful business.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet him in person, I did get to listen in on a few of his conference calls and Skype meetings. He seemed like a very intelligent and reasonable man, albeit stubborn and eccentric, like so many other pioneers, eager to leave his mark the world and create a better future for all of humanity. It is a difficult step for every inventor and founder when the time comes to entrust other minds with their ideas, knowing that there may be a change in direction. I think Sebastian was coming to terms with this dilemma before he was suddenly taken away by a catastrophe. I am certain that in his heart of hearts Sebastian Espejo wanted everything that New Life Ventures can offer a growing company and in my mind, there was never a shadow of doubt that Quito Foods would be a great addition to our portfolio.

We want to thank Sebastian´s mother, Lupita Espejo, and the Quito Foods staff for doing right by us. In business, growing pains can be brutal and sometimes personal feelings, irrational fears and external interests (be it those of other companies or paranoid conspiracy theorists with a press pass) can cause unwanted disturbances. We are glad to see that the proverbial hatchet has been buried deep in the ground (read the post of Mr. Espejo´s mother, Lupita, here).

I am certain that we will all be pulling in the same direction from now on and I know this is what Sebastian would have wanted.

Sebastian Espejo was maybe the first one of his community who managed to straddle the chasm between ancient wisdom and modern science. He was always chasing knowledge and for him nothing was greater than the book. It was his sincere wish that others would follow in his footsteps. I once listened in on a call between him and his grandmother, as she lay on her deathbed where he made this clear. In his soothing, gentle voice he told her:  “I am the beginning of a long journey.”
